We spent this past weekend vacationing on the Big Island with Joe, Anu and her family. We were so stoked when Anu told us at the beginning of the summer that her Dad won a gift certificate for a weekend stay at the Hilton Waikoloa timeshares and decided to give it to us. It was such a generous gift to give and believe me we appreciated and enjoyed every single second.

The boys left early (5 a.m. kinda early) on Friday morning to catch the first flight into Kona, so they could golf with Auntie Shal & Uncle Russ. They were able to play golf at two of the nicest courses on big island and they couldn’t have been more happy.

Since Anu and I were going for more of the relaxing (let’s get drunk at the pool) kinda weekend we didn’t arrive until a little after 12:30 on Friday. Once we landed we drove over to Costco to stock up on all the essentials then headed straight for the hotel to enjoy some much needed girl time.

IMG_7115Welcome to our home-base for the next 3 days.

As soon as the bell man (barley) closed the door Anu & I were jumping up and down and running through the condo like 5 year olds for a good 10 minutes.

(this picture captures “vacation” Anu perfectly, my goodness I just love her)

DSC00711Saturday morning the boys hit the golf course while Anu & I took over Kona, the Hilton, the pool and the pool bar

(you know just your typical girls day)

All that swimming and sunning sure did make us thirsty, so it was no big surprise that we spent the rest of our afternoon at the pool bar

DSC00718We made friends with our bartender Donna and before we knew it we had sipped and laughed the afternoon away

DSC00746

We got these luscious looking drinks to take back to the room for the boys

(and then drank most of them on the way while stealing a golf cart…)

(don’t judge us, the ground was HOT!)

DSC00747The boys were not amused with us so they hit the bar by themselves

(but we of course crashed their party)IMG_7153#jjacmusketeers aka double diva’s

DSC_0034After the pool we headed back to the room for some more apples to apples (to go) sunset, dinner and drinks

DSC_0057DSC_0053DSC_0041Since Anu & I had spent the day pooling & exploring we had found Sansei (which is one of our favorite sushi places on Maui) so we opted not to tell the boys and surprised them with late night 1/2 off pupus and karaoke

DSC00752this is their “surprise” faces

DSC00751we were pretty proud of ourselves

DSC00760so we signed them up for some “surprise” songs, lol

DSC00759Joe didn’t seem to mind

DSC00771DSC00768

We even sang a few duets

(we would NEVER do this in Maui, btw)

DSC00777On Sunday we all went down to the other Hilton resort and spent our day pooling and lagoon-ing

DSC00778DSC00785DSC00786 and we of course hit the slides

DSC00787DSC00783DSC00799DSC00801 you don’t even want to know why they are cracking up

(or you do…but you just had to be there)

DSC00804

After hours of pooling we were totally water logged so we hit the road to go leave our mark on Kona by writing our hashtag in coral off of one of the main highways

First and foremost I would like to say that I am loving my new found freedom of extraordinary. I’ve had the time to slow down and really stop and appreciate all that’s around me and embodies me. I’ve adjusted to my relaxing wife life and my new “normal” pretty easily and I am just soaking up every second of it!

beach bumming

This morning we woke up around 7a.m. made some oatmeal with fresh fruit and headed out to hit the trail. We’ve been wanting to explore Maui more and we heard the Wahihe’e Ridge Trail was pretty awesome with great views.

20130303-145954.jpg

We got on the trail by 9:30a.m. and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. It was brisk with the perfect amount of chill in the air to cool you down as you sweat. The trail is 5 miles long round trip and has incredible views of the valley along with luscious green forest.

20130303-150704.jpg
You gain about 1,500 feet over the 2 1/2 miles up the ridge so this sign is very important

Since you are climbing so high it is suggested that you get on this trail early (by 8a.m.) for maximum viewing exposure. However Colt & I got on the trail a little later than 9a.m. and although some clouds had already moved in the views were still breathtaking.

20130303-151500.jpg
This is one of the first outlooks on your way up. You can see two beautiful flowing falls in the distance

This hike gets your heart pumping and gluteus working right away. By the time you hit 1/2 a mile you’ve already climbed 400 feet!

20130303-152014.jpg
Someone was hitching a ride by 400 feet, my little “wanna be hiker”

The landscape was incredible and took my breath away. You are hiking through guava, kukui, swamp mahogany, cook island pines and millions of ferns all while moving towards this view!

20130303-152439.jpg

Waihe’e Valley in all its raw beauty

As we kept climbing the air kept getting cooler and cooler it felt great to feel the elevation of the climb.

20130303-152840.jpg
Going up!

We saw so many unique plants and trees along the way and we saw a ton of these, they are actually the stems that the ferns grow out of!

20130303-153215.jpg
They reminded me of the caterpillar (the Hookah-Smoking caterpillar hehe) in Alice and Wonderland

Since it was a Sunday and later in the morning there were a lot of hikers also on the trail with us going up as well as coming down.

20130303-153711.jpg

The most handsome hiker I saw all day:)

Colt loved all the different kinds of trees. The views reminded me of scenes from Twilight (they were that good)

20130303-154028.jpg
My very own Edward Cullen

It took us a little over an hour to get to the top since we continued to stop for several photo ops!

20130303-154213.jpg
Kai & I taking a little breather..

20130303-154248.jpg
keep on climbing, climbing…

20130303-154335.jpg
Natural beauty just lurking around ever twist and turn

Once we finally got to the top it was beautiful! Its the perfect place to have a light lunch if you should know to pack one. The air is cool and the visual silence is like nothing you can experience unless you are at 2,563 feet.

20130303-154921.jpg
I love where the ocean meets the sky and the accent of green, there’s nothing better.

20130303-155027.jpg
Flying high, freebirding

20130303-155116.jpg
There’s nothing that I love more than experiencing this life and exploring this earth with this man

20130303-155239.jpg
Going down..

20130303-155308.jpg
Kai loves this part, she just cruises all the way down

20130303-155406.jpg
Taking an extra moment to take it all in (once again)

20130303-155449.jpg
I love the forest and getting lost in paradise

This hike is so beautiful and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Maui or to residents who have yet to experience it. If you love having your head in the clouds and paradise at your feet you will absolutely love it. I know we did!

This past weekend Colt & I ran our first race of 2013 with my sister & her friend Jen in Oahu. We had signed up for the Great Aloha Run back in January when we made our New Year’s resolutions to run 200 miles over the course of the year. At the time I thought that goal would be attainable without it being too easy or too hard. I liked the idea of attaching miles to my workouts and signing up for some races as well.

The Great Aloha Run or GAR is an 8.15-mile foot race in Oahu that begins at the Aloha Tower and finishes in the Aloha Stadium. The Great Aloha Run has been recognized nationally as one of the top “100 Great Road Races” to participate in by Runner’s World Magazine and this year they had over 18,000 runners. It is a relatively flat course with several aid stations and a ton of entertainment which makes it perfect for any runner.

Here I am with my sister at Aloha Stadium getting ready to catch the bus to Waikiki at 4am (fun fact: it was her birthday and she still got up to run 8.15 miles)

Riding the bus from Aloha Stadium to Aloha Towers to the starting line. I look way to excited considering it is 4am and we are about to run 8 miles.

Colt, Jen, my sister, me and 18,000 other people at the starting line moments before the gun went off to single the start of the run.

at one point of the course you run under the highway so there is a lot of shade and the temperature is cool. this was our favorite part of the run and lasted for a good two mile stretch. They also had multiple aid stations with water, bands and tons of people cheering you!

A kids band playing awesome music and cheering on all the runners.

You run into the stadium to cross the finish line and it is pretty awesome. Colt said he as he ran in he could just imagine the whole crowd erupting and screaming "COLT" as he crossed the finish line (not going to lie the energy and feel really was that cool)

Since Colt finished before me he was able to caputre me crossing the finish line, here I come.

So happy to be done!

So happy to be done and run right into Colt’s arms! (I will have more pictures of all of us crossing the finish line once the photographers upload all of them onto the GAR website)

Going to see my Mom, Kai, Addie and Brandon after the race. It’s so fun to have people waiting and cheering you on.

Colt, Jess and I with our proud Mama. She was so proud of us for doing it.

Colt’s official time was 1:15:19. I could not have been more proud of him. He did so amazing and ran 9:13 minute miles. He truly inspires me.

My sister & her friend Jen did so awesome also they finished in 1:25:15! This was amazing considering my sister predicted upon signing up that she would finish in 2 1/2 to 3 hours haha she is so funny!

I beat my personal goal by 2 minutes and finished in 1:18:21 about 3 minutes behind Colt. He really set the mile pace for me and pushed me to run faster and harder. I couldn't believe I was 145 in my age category, I'll take it for my first 8 mile run.

As of today I have already ran 73.16 miles (in January I ran 42.88 and so far in February I ran 30.2) only 126.84 more miles to go until I hit my goal for the year!

(I think I might have to consider a new goal….)
